Range Rules, Commands and Etiquette

As well as range safety rules, certain standards of etiquette are followed by shooters who are considerate of others.

Here are just a few examples of proper range etiquette:

list bullet When shooting blackpowder firearms, shoot from a location downwind of other shooters on the firing line.

list bullet Ask the owner's or shooter's permission before handling that person's firearm or equipment.

list bullet Avoid interrupting or distracting others while they are shooting.

list bullet Avoid rapid-fire shooting if it will disturb those sighting in or doing deliberate target work.

list bullet Only shoot on your own targets.

list bullet Assist new shooters by offering some advice or coaching, or letting them try your equipment.

list bullet Be aware of where your brass is ejecting, especially while using a semi-automatic firearm. A considerate shooter will move his or her shooting position on the firing line or install a barrier between themselves and the next shooting bays. This will help prevent the shooter beside you from being hit with your spent brass.

list bullet Clean up after shooting by picking up your brass and taking down your target. Leave the range as clean or cleaner than you found it.
