Spruce Grouse

The call of a spruce grouse consists of a series of peeping clucks except during courtship when the males produce low, guttural whining sounds. The male will perform a distinctive fluttering flight from a tree or from the ground while making a drumming sound with its wings. They prefer a diet of buds and conifer needles, but will feed on a variety of plants and insects when available.

Habitat:

  • Open coniferous forests.
  • Nests in dense undergrowth.
